CSC 264: Computational Biology

This course will not be offered 2002-2003.

"Computational biology" refers to the use of computational methods for solving biological problems. This new field encompasses biology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics and has significant impact upon biological, medical, and pharmaceutical research. This course teaches cutting-edge research in various areas of computational biology, including computational phylogeny, molecular computation, statistical methods in genetics, population genetics, functional genomics, and RNA secondary structure prediction. Each of the topics will be delivered by one lecture (sometimes by a guest lecturer) and a classroom paper discussion preceding the lecture. Students are required to read papers, lead some classroom discussions, take notes of some lectures, and conduct research projects. Basic computer programming skills (at the level of CSC171) are required.
