Astronaut Ed Gibson '59 to present Darcey Riley '12 Prestigious Award

University of Rochester Alumnus  and Astronaut Ed Gibson will be in Rochester on September 15th to present URCS senior Darcey Riley (AKA Halley Orshan) with the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's check for $10,000.  Please join us in celebrating this event in Hoyt Hall at 7PM on Thursday September 15th.

Crovella (Ph.D. 1994) named Fellow of ACM

Mark Crovella, currently on the Faculty of the Department of Computer Science at Boston University, was named a Fellow of the ACM 2010.  Mark studied under Tom LeBlanc while at Rochester. 

Xipeng Shen receives Early Career Research Award

Xipeng Shen (Ph.D. '06) was among 68 researchers selected to receive the prestigious Department of Energy Office of Science Fiscal Year 2011 Early Career Research Award. Awardees were selected from a pool of about 1,150 university- and national laboratory-based applicants, based on peer review by outside scientific experts.

Michael (Ph.D '97) receives IBM Award

Maged Michael (Ph.D. '97) has received an IBM 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award in appreciation for Scientific Innovations in Lock-Free Memory Management.

Vallino (Ph.D. '98) named chair of Software Engineering at RIT

Jim Vallino '98 was recently named chair of the Department of Software Engineering in the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technolgy.  Jim has been with the department since 1997.

Spear (PhD '09) wins Outstanding Dissertation Award for engineering.

Michael Spear (PhD '09) has been selected as co-winner of this year's Outstanding Dissertation Award for Engineering. Mike's dissertation entitled "Fast Software Transactions," was advised by Michael Scott.  Mike is currently an assistant professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

Vallino (Ph.D. '98) wins Oustanding Teaching Award at RIT

Dr James Vallino has been selected as co-winner this year of the Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching at Rochester Institute of Technology.  The award will be presented at RIT's annual Celebration of Teaching and Scholarship, an evening reception and dinner, Tuesday, May 11th.   Jim has been teaching and challenging students at RIT since 1997.

Ciaraldi (MS '90) on WPI Winning Robot Team

Mike Ciaraldi, CS Professor of Practice at Worcester Polytechnic University,  was part of the winning robotics team for the NASA Regolith Excavation Challenge. web.cs.wpi.edu/News/Regolith-prize.html

Chunqiang Tang (Ph.D.'04) Wins Multiple IBM Research Awards

URCS alumnus Chunqiang Tang (Ph.D. 2004), a researcher at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, has received multiple prestigious IBM Research awards.

  • Recipient of the IBM Research "Accomplishment Award" in 2009, for contributions to the PARA-medic tool that diagnoses problems with enterprise IT systems. The qualification of this award requires not only technical innovation but also concrete, measurable impacts on IBM's revenue by 10 million USD or more.

Lall accepted tenure track position at Denison

Ashwin Lall (PhD '08) has accepted a tenure track position at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.  Denison is an independent, residential, liberal arts and sciences college founded in 1831 located in Central Ohio.

Lall will be in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and will join the department next fall to teach Computer Science courses.  Currently, Ashwin is doing a Post-doctoral Fellowship at Georgia Tech University.
