Student Scholarships

New: application deadline extended to 10 September.

(Early registration deadline extended to 18 September
for students who apply for a scholarship by 10 September.)

The ACM Special Interest Group on Operating Systems, in conjunction with the ACM Student Research Competition, and with additional financial support from HP Labs and the National Science Foundation, will offer a limited number of student scholarships to attend SOSP.

Scholarships will be awarded by the scholarship committee based on a combination of need and merit.

Each scholarship covers the SOSP conference registration, including meals and proceedings, and a shared hotel room during the conference. Additional funding may be awarded toward the cost of travel.

Students receiving scholarships must agree to serve as a session scribe (if required) during the conference.

Who should apply

Funding is available to all students at educational institutions, world-wide. Members of groups historically under-represented at SOSP are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants are encouraged to participate in the poster session and work-in-progress presentations. Posters as well as student-authored papers can receive further recognition (and cash awards) through participation in the Student Research Competition (SRC). Approximately 45% of the funding for student scholarships is coming from the SRC this year. Participation in the SRC is not required in order to apply for a student scholarship, but it may increase your chances of success.

Although most applicants in past years have been graduate students, undergraduates who are actively involved in systems research projects are welcome to apply, and in fact there is a special division of the SRC specifically for undergraduates.

Applicants must be members of the ACM. See the ACM site for a student membership application. Note that ACM provides reduced rates for students residing in economically developing countries.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted by email to sospss@wheaton.edu. The body of the message should include (as plain text) the information from the form below. Students who apply by 10 September will be notified of any award by 16 September, and can then register without paying the registration fee.

Attach to the message a position paper that describes (in no more than three pages) your research and publications and explains the benefit you expect from attending SOSP. The paper should be in either plain text (preferred) or PDF. You may omit the position paper if you are the principal author of an accepted paper at this year's SOSP.

Ask your advisor to submit (directly) a letter of recommendation to to sospss@wheaton.edu.
