I was also reminded of Douglas Hofstadter's game of Hruska, named after the senator (R-NE, died last year at age 94) infamous for his 1970 Senate speech defending Supreme Court nominee Harold Carswell: Even if he were mediocre, there are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to a little representation, aren't they, and a little chance? Hruska is a 3-player game (can be generalized to (2n+1) players) where the object is to be as mediocre as possible. In level-0 Hruska, everyone picks a real number, perhaps without restriction, and the median wins. In level-(k+1) Hruska, the winner is whoever has the median number of wins in 5 games of Level-k Hruska. Ties can be replayed or resolved on a rotating basis.
