CSC 200 Assignment: Voting Systems
Do some quick research on multi-candidate election systems.
Lane Hemaspaandra of our very own department has some work on this, which
might provide some starting pointers (and then again, it might be
non-trivial to chase down any non-Hemaspaandra, non-complexity-theoretic
references).
Prepare a 2-4 page paper with at least 4 references discussing the
history, merits, and practicality of various proposed systems.
Be sure you hit some of the paradoxical results that arise in such systems
and the Nobel Prize work associated with this.
Apply the results of your research to the
rank voting data
for the class ITRUG microproposals, (everyone ranks their top 3-5)
Which method(s) would you suggest using to select 4-6 proposals
for funding on the basis of the supplied rankings?
Do all methods yield the same results?
If not, which method(s) would you select and why?
Due Thursday, January 20, 2005.
